I offer services in English language proofreading and fact-checking of publications and other documents of all types. I was a professional engineer with a career spanning 39 years in power generation companies and associated international consultancies. My experience includes authoring, proofreading and editing of engineering and construction-related documents. These include proposals, specifications, contracts, reports, construction method statements and design intent documents.
I have recent experience of proofreading, proof-editing and fact-checking on both a professional basis and as a volunteer.

Pre-Construction Planning Engineer
Member of NNB Genco (EDF Energy/CNG) multi-disciplinary team managing procurement, engineering and construction planning of Conventional Island of Hinkley Point C Nuclear Power Station. Responsible for all aspects of pre-construction planning of 1800 MW steam turbine generator, associated auxiliaries and electrical connection to new 400 kV substation.
Project Manager, Conventional Island
Heading a small team responsible for design development of the Conventional Island (steam turbine generator and auxiliaries, condensate and feedwater systems, connections to high voltage substation) of the UK’s first Advanced Boiling Water Reactor power station. Management of Client side activities (mainly design review) in the conduct of a Front End Engineering Design contract between Horizon and Hitachi-GE Nuclear Energy and subsequently an Early Contractor Engagement contract between Horizon and a joint venture formed for the purpose of undertaking an Engineer-Procure-Construct contract for the majority of the power station scope.
Also responsible as Project Manager for the Basis of Design, managing the production by Horizon of a set of design intent documents covering the full power station scope.
Senior Project Development Manager
Responsible for the interface between RWE Technology and RWE Generation UK for all RWE Generation’s UK power plant development projects, from the “opportunity” phase through to Final Investment Decision (FID). Identification of suitable project development managers, formation of development teams and the delivery of a range of services in support of each development project. I personally fulfilled the project development manager role on some projects. RWE Technology’s input focused on technical, procurement and construction aspects. Responsibilities included development of the conversion of generating units at existing coal-fired power station units to burn 100% biomass fuel. I was a member of RWE npower’s Process Safety Steering Group. I was also responsible for interfacing with potential UK customers for RWE’s external consultancy business.
Power Station Design Manager
Heading a small team providing technical services supporting the development of new build power plant projects. Major activities included the management of the production of Functional Guides (design intent documents) for the Tilbury C and Blyth C advanced supercritical coal-fired power station projects (800 MW units): technical support to the development of Willington C combined cycle gas turbine gas-fired power station project (2 000 MW nominal): leadership of the RWE Power (Germany) / npower Centre of Expertise for combined cycle gas turbine plant: management of the initial stages of the harmonisation of technical specifications for the procurement of new thermal power stations across the RWE Group.
Project Engineering Manager
Flue Gas Emissions Reduction Project, Aberthaw Power Station (3 x 500 MW, coal-fired). Heading a multi-disciplinary team managing the engineering aspects of an Engineer-Procure-Construct Contract for a retrofit seawater process Flue Gas Desulphurisation Plant and optional Selective Catalytic Reduction NOx abatement plant. Both are/would have been the first of their type installed at a UK power station. Technical input to “bespoke” draft conditions of contract. Led technical assessment of tenders and managed all technical aspects of contract stage.
The following is a selection of the main positions held. In all for which I was PROJECT MANAGER, I was responsible for managing WS Atkins’ resources in fulfilling the consultancy contract and the contract’s financial performance.
PROJECT MANAGER. Engineering and Environmental Consultant for Flue Gas Desulphurisation Plant, Rugeley Power Station, for International Power PLC. Heading a multi-disciplinary team performing a range of engineering studies; production of Environmental Statement, Stage 1 IPC Variation Application, Section 36 Planning Consent Application and production of complete Tender Enquiry Documents for a retrofit Flue Gas Desulphurisation Plant. The plant was to employ the limestone/gypsum process, serving 2 x 500 MW coal-fired units at a power station in the UK.
SENIOR ENGINEER/ASSISTANT PROJECT MANAGER. Al-Khafji Natural Gas Offshore Pipeline Project for Arabian Oil Company – ARAMCO Gulf Operations Company, Khafji Joint Operations. Control of and input to technical and commercial aspects of and production of Tender Enquiry Documents for a 40 km gas supply pipeline, supplying gas from an offshore gathering platform to a gas-fired power station. All work performed at Client’s operational headquarters and production facility in Saudi Arabia.
PROJECT MANAGER. Independent Engineer for Marmara Ereglisi Power Project, Turkey, for BNP Paribas. Independent Engineer, advising banks financing a 480 MW dual gas/distillate oil-fired Combined Cycle Gas Turbine independent Build-Operate-Transfer power project. Plant consists of a single module comprising 2 x Alstom GT13E2 gas turbines and a single steam turbine generator.
PROJECT MANAGER. Pre-contract Engineering: Flue Gas Desulphurisation Plant, West Burton Power Station, for TXU Europe Power Ltd. Responsible for production of and specialist input to a Minimum Functional Specification and complete Tender Enquiry Documents for a retrofit Flue Gas Desulphurisation Plant. Also managed and provided specialist input to Tender Assessment and Contract Negotiation process up to contract placement. The plant was to employ the limestone/gypsum process, serving 4 x 500 MW coal-fired units at a power station in the UK.
PROJECT MANAGER. Emissions reduction study, High Marnham Power Station, for TXU Europe Power Ltd. Prefeasibility study into the possibility of retrofitting abatement equipment for the control of particulate and other pollutant emissions from a power station in the UK (5 x 200 MW units, coal-fired).
PROJECT MANAGER. Engineering Assessment: Flue Gas Desulphurisation Pilot Study, West Burton Power Station, for Eastern Generation Ltd. Responsible for coordination of and specialist input to Feasibility Study for a retrofit Flue Gas Desulphurisation Plant serving 4 x 500 MW coal-fired units at a power station in the UK. Part of a study which also included Environmental Assessments.
PROJECT MANAGER. Technical assistance to bidding consortium: Phu My 2.2 Power Project, Vietnam, for Mobil Power Inc. Technical and project scheduling advice and assistance to consortium partner, bidding to Government of Vietnam for a 740 MW dual gas/distillate oil-fired Combined Cycle Gas Turbine independent Build-Operate-Transfer power project. Proposed technology employed two generating units, each comprising an ABB GT26 gas turbine in single-shaft arrangement with a steam turbine and generator.
SENIOR ENGINEER. Project ARBRE: Banker’s Engineer, 8 MW Power Station, Eggborough, North Yorkshire, for ING Barings. Review of draft Project Agreements for a wood gasification process combined cycle power station intended to use short-rotation coppice wood fuel.
SENIOR ENGINEER. Banker’s Engineer, 70 MW Power Station, Belle Vue, Mauritius, for Sumitomo Bank. Review of draft Project Agreements, participation in Performance Tests and periodic operation phase reporting for a dual bagasse/coal fired power station.
UK PROJECT MANAGER. Owner’s Engineer, Europeat Project, Ireland, for Marubeni Europower Ltd. Assisted Marubeni’s tender for a 120 MW peat-fired power station project on a Build-Own-Operate basis. Principally responsible for design of peat handling, storage and blending plant and ash handling and storage plant.
ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGER. Maritsa East 2 Thermal Power Plant Unit 8 Completion Project for Electrowatt Engineering Ltd, Zürich (ultimate client: Natsionalna Elektricheska Kompania, Bulgaria). Responsible for technical assessment of tenders for a Flue Gas Desulphurisation Plant serving 2 x 215 MW lignite-fired units in south east Bulgaria. Also provided advice and input to commercial and financial evaluations.
SENIOR ENGINEER. Due diligence study on the possible acquisition of an existing waste to energy plant for a confidential client. Responsible for assessment of the feasibility of improvements and upgrades, acceptability of a recently-implemented project for the modernisation of the existing facilities and likely through-life costs of the remaining lifetime of the plant.

CONSTRUCTION MANAGER. Eastcroft Incinerator Modernisation Project, for WasteNotts Ltd. Responsible for supervision of main contractor engaged in modernisation work at existing municipal waste incinerator, including Flue Gas Treatment Plant, Grate Ash Handling Plant, Control System and Drainage System modifications.
SENIOR ENGINEER. Maritsa East 2 Thermal Power Plant Unit 8 Completion Project for Natsionalna Elektricheska Kompania, Bulgaria. Responsible for coordination of and specialist input to Feasibility Study, Outline Design and Tender Enquiry Document for a Flue Gas Desulphurisation Plant serving 2 x 215 MW lignite-fired units in south east Bulgaria.
PROJECT MANAGER. Study of Upgrading the Fuel Inventory, New Fuel Pipelines and Gas Availability of Power Plants, for Saudi Consolidated Electric Company in the Western Region. Responsible for the completion of reports on a study on options for increasing the security of generation in western Saudi Arabia by increasing strategic fuel stocks, improving fuel supply infrastructure and introducing fuel diversity.
PROJECT MANAGER. Assistance with Vendor Selection, Incinerator Projects, for Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Europe, Ltd. Responsible for the identification of potential vendors for a range of equipment and materials for use in waste incineration projects, mainly general power plant/industrial items. Development of and incorporation of vendor information in spreadsheet-based database. Countries covered: Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, Romania.
PROJECT ENGINEER. Eastcroft Incinerator Modernisation Project, for WasteNotts Ltd. Responsible for technical aspects of preparation of Tender Enquiry Document for modernisation of existing municipal waste incinerator. Responsible for technical aspects of tender assessment.
SENIOR ENGINEER. Assistance in preparation of Plant Design Criteria Memoranda and Enquiry Specification for Mae Moh P.S. Units 8-11 FGD Retrofit Project, Thailand (Secondment to Electrowatt, Zürich).
KILLINGHOLME POWERGEN COMBINED CYCLE GAS TURBINE POWER STATION (2 X 450 MW MODULES, GAS-FIRED) PROJECT
Responsible for writing specifications for and tender assessment of gas turbines, heat recovery boilers and steam cycle plant. Responsible for monitoring and coordinating design progress and quality assurance in the following technical areas: heat recovery boilers and auxiliaries; steam turbine and auxiliaries; heating, ventilating & air conditioning plant; hydrogen and carbon dioxide plant. Responsible for ensuring the turnkey contractor's compliance with statutory and client requirements for health and safety during construction and commissioning; monitoring the contractor's compliance with these requirements. Represented the project team in negotiations with the National Grid Company during the design development phase for the high voltage substation. Client's sole site-based representative during the preliminary works phase of the project. Also on site during the commissioning and precommissioning phases.
Responsible for writing specifications for and tender assessment of the bulk materials (limestone and gypsum) handling plant of the then world's largest Flue Gas Desulphurisation plant (6 x 660 MW, coal-fired). Included investigation of the available technologies, establishment of design parameters, production of technical and commercial specifications and vendor evaluation. Responsible for writing specifications for and tender assessment of aspects of the main FGD process plant contract, including limestone storage and preparation plant.
Power Station Design Engineer
Responsible for conceptual design and layout work and bid evaluation in the field of bulk materials handling, including coal, ash, dust, limestone and gypsum handling. Coordinated CEGB's effort in all mechanical engineering aspects of its rôle as consultant to a UK contractor tendering for a 2 x 350 MW coal-fired power station in China. Involved in discussions with the major UK-based suppliers of large industrial gas turbine plant. Responsible for development of conceptual gas turbine power station designs and layouts for cost estimating purposes.
Construction Site Engineer
Responsible for the supervision of contractors engaged in contracts for the construction of a large (6 x 660 MW) coal-fired power station. Duties included progress monitoring, quality checks, budget control and safety. Main plant areas: boiler feed pumps and feed heating system. Responsible for the organisation and direction of a series of tests to identify the causes of high amplitude vibrations of feed system pipework under certain operating conditions.
Site Project Engineer
Responsible for the supervision of contractors engaged on a variety of contracts for the installation, refurbishment, modification and maintenance of plant at a large (4 x 500 MW) coal-fired power station. Similar duties to those at Drax Completion site. Main plant areas: coal handling plant; hydrogen generation, storage and distribution plant; cryogenic and gaseous nitrogen storage and distribution plant; conversion of lighting-up fuel oil plant from medium to heavy grade fuel oil. Responsible for the supervision of contractors at Bulls Bridge Gas Turbine Power Station (4 x 70 MW distillate oil fired aero-derivative), returning "mothballed" plant to service over a period of a few weeks.
General grounding in the activities of the CEGB. Included formal courses on principles of conventional and nuclear power plant; courses at major plant manufacturers; on-job training at conventional and nuclear power stations, construction sites and transmission operational units. Also included a course at East Warwickshire College, covering workshop technology, and a design and manufacture project.
