I continue to seek challenges to be SUCCESSFUL THROUGH DELIVERY in the MANAGEMENT and DEVELOPMENT of: whole business / change / stakeholders / programmes / social responsibility.
My career started in the pharmaceutical industry where I experienced a number of technical roles in a manufacturing environment. After five years, I left to read for a degree in accounting and finance at Lancaster University as a mature student.
Experience in business then prospered with chartered accountants and management consultants, KPMG, and following secondment / contract work in the NHS, I developed my own business in retail and property management.
That led to a natural move into business development and commercial management working for the National Lottery operator, Camelot Group, and then for local multi-media company, CN Media Group.
Business management at the Port of Workington then afforded a more holistic experience of the business cycle in a specialist logistics-centred environment, honing skills including programme management, budgetary control, stakeholder relations and social impact.
As Supply Chain Manager for West Cumbria Mining, I was maximising value through the management and development of the supply chain in context of optimum social responsibility.
Most recently, I was Regional Key Account Manager for Peterson [ onepeterson.com ], strategically managing critical logistics solutions for new and existing clients that set industry-leading standards in safety, quality control, logistics support and related activities.

Regional Key Account Manager
I strategically managed critical logistics solutions for new and existing clients that set industry-leading standards in safety, quality control, logistics support and related activities. Driving business diversification towards new sectors such as nuclear, defence, governmental and commodity logistics were central to my achievements in providing stability to a portfolio that had been traditionally reliant on oil & gas.
Work winning with Sellafield Limited, BAe Systems, Total UK and the Crown Commercial Service all represent hallmarks of my success in the delivery of new business.
Supply Chain & Procurement Manager
I authored the business’ Supply Chain Management Plan and I was responsible for its strategic development in maximising value through the contract supply chain via its implementation and delivery.
Tactically this involved producing and directing contracting strategy and supporting the development of project schedules alongside functional and performance requirements.
I developed and managed supplier pre-qualification and tender processes towards award of contract.
In addition, I directed and had special responsibility for the off-site development of an inbound logistics, consolidation and distribution facility.
From June 2018, I was also assigned many general management responsibilities for the West Cumbria site. This included Chairing the Community Liaison Group and supporting the West Cumbria Works employability programme. I was also part of the initial business task force that ultimately established the local social enterprise company, All Together Cumbria.

Business & Development Manager
I helped develop strategy and governance to deliver multi-million-pound capital investment from a public-public partnership funding model alongside a business diversification programme developing both revenues and profitability. This encompassed significant budgetary control and the establishment of a monitoring system to measure outputs against milestones.
I repositioned the business to strengthen its place in exploiting new and emerging markets, particularly around energy. This resulted in the Port’s offer being transformed to a multi-modal, port-centric logistics hub.
Significant programme management skills were developed, not only in the delivery of the capital infrastructure upgrades but also in restructuring and skilling teams to support the business change processes.
Extensive external relations activities at all levels helped me build stakeholder confidence in the business as being reliable and consistent in its service offer whilst giving value for money and driving added value. I also built relations with a host of interest groups in the wider community to develop a positive image of the business as a consistently ‘responsible neighbour’.
I developed business and operational plans that delivered significant change to working practices and staff structures across three strategic sites.
Product development helped diversify the traditional newspaper advertising offer and I contributed to the early digital strategy of the Group.
Leadership of large teams and the implementation of change were significant in my development.
National Business Executive
Notable success with the National Lottery in retail, including national awards, resulted in me being ‘head-hunted’ by Camelot.
I was responsible for the brand management and revenue development of the National Lottery product portfolio through the retailer estate.
Latterly, I worked exclusively with the biggest retailers (supermarkets) to refine in-store product positioning and tactical sales plans. I also represented my team nationally in new product development.
I was a staff representative on a link group in liaison with the Community Fund now better known as the Big Lottery Fund.
I purchased a small convenience retail/Post Office business with a partner and then systematically changed and developed the offer over 7 years trading.
Revenue growth and profitability were significant over the period but the partnership’s diversification towards commercial and domestic property management was the most significant and successful aspect of business development.
I positioned the business as a ‘community hub’ for local agencies and neighbourhood groups to meet. I was also a governor at Ewanrigg Junior School during this time and established Ewanrigg Junior School Association as a registered charity.
I supported a special project for South Cumbria Health Authority in establishing policy, management plans and reporting systems for treasury and asset management.
The project outputs were packaged as a programme of training for finance staff.
My work experience in industry immediately set me aside from the clear majority of peers and hence I was regularly demanded to support teams in the field working on corporate support and business recovery projects.
I was exposed to a number of failing companies and quickly learned the fundamentals of business!
I contributed specifically to the reorganisation of assets and staff as well as their often-significant associated budgets.
Self-financed honours degree course in Accounting & Finance.
I held various technical support roles in the primary stages of pharmaceutical production.
